A Very Important Asset

On 6 October, General Bjørn Ingemann Bisserup, the Danish Chief of Defence, paid a visit to Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE). General Bisserup became Chief of Defence in January 2017 and it was his first visit to our Corps.

Commenting on the reason for his visit, General Bisserup said that he needed to visit the Headquarters because of two main reasons: “First of all, there are Danish soldiers and officers here and, secondly, Multinational Corps Northeast is a very important part of the Danish Command Structure. We see it as a very important asset.”

During the visit, General Bisserup discussed with MNC NE Commander Lieutenant General Manfred Hofmann and MNC NE Chief of Staff Brigadier General Per Orluff Knudsen the Corps’ roles and responsibilities resulting from becoming a High-Readiness Force (Land) Headquarters and Land Component Command. General Bisserup explained that, “From the Danish military perspective, this is important in the sense that it is the only Corps in this area. And this means that it is the Corps which will have the responsibility for the operations in this area.

General Bisserup also reflected on the transformation process that is currently taking place within the Danish Defence: “For many years, NATO had a focus on international operations, and we will still have it in the future. However, we also will regain our focus on Article V as to be a reliable partner in the deterrence in this NATO area. And that’s what you call transformation.” Within this framework, General Bisserup sees MNC NE as an important partner and assures of constant Danish contribution to the Corps and – with the forthcoming Danish deployment to enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Estonia – also to the Baltic region.
