Estonian Commitment

On 7 February, General Riho Terras, Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, paid a visit to Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE). Our distinguished guest was familiarised with the current high-readiness status of HQ MNC NE and shared his insight on security-related issues in the Baltic region.

General Terras met with the Corps’ flag officers to get updated on the latest developments within the Corps and exchange views on further collaboration. As the General emphasized himself, HQ MNC NE is of the upmost importance for Estonia and its defence:

It’s our big commitment to have 6 Estonians here. I have no other headquarters in the world with more than 2 servicemen but this one.

This cooperation will get even stronger during the upcoming triennial exercise “Hedgehog 2018” scheduled for May. “I’m very happy that the elements of the Corps will come to Estonia and be part of our exercise.” – our distinguished guest said – “One day you could be the ones planning it.

Referring to the latest actions authorized by NATO in the Baltic States and Poland, such as deployment of the four multinational eFP Battle Groups or establishment of Multinational Division North-East, the General stated that they were routine activities and should be carried out in such manner. “It’s a normal military business to be prepared for all emergencies.” – he stated.

Bringing his remarks to an end, General Terras stressed that the past years had proven to be a time of enhancing security and confidence between members of NATO in the Baltic region.

It’s an amazing development that we have had, including air-policing or increased capabilities of our own national armed forces. Estonia has never been as secure as it is today – being a member of the most powerful military Alliance in the world.” – General Terras summarized.
