30th Anniversary of German Reunification

This 3rd of October marks the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. The end of our fatherland’s division was the result of a peaceful revolution in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in autumn 1989. Thus, the credit for this belongs to the people of the GDR.

German unity ultimately becoming a reality also was a result of the trust that our European neighbours, the United States of America, and the Soviet Union placed in us Germans.

This was nothing to be taken for granted in light of the German history of the first half of the 20th century. It seems almost a miracle and is a historical privilege that we are able to appreciate the gift of our successful and peaceful reunification. That is why it should be our continued motivation and commitment to do all in our power to ensure that the global community keeps their faith in Germany and that we as Germans keep contributing to peaceful coexistence in the world.

I am wishing all of us a happy Day of German Unity as well as strength and confidence for the tasks still ahead of us.
