Commander visits Latvia

Ādaži, Latvia – On October 15–16, Commander Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE), Lieutenant General Sławomir Wojciechowski, visited Multinational Division North (MND-N) and NATO Force Integration Unit Latvia (NFIU LVA). He met with their commanders and soldiers to further enhance the already strong relationships within the Corps’ chain of command.

The first day of the visit was marked by a memorable moment. The Commander awarded Latvian Army Staff Sergeant Ilze Čudo with his Certificate of Appreciation. It was the first time a soldier who is not a HQ MNC NE member was presented with this award. LTG Wojciechowski took the opportunity to thank Staff Sergeant Čudo for her outstanding performance in NFIU LVA at the time the unit celebrates its fifth anniversary. The certificate highlights how important the entire NFIU LVA led by Colonel Janis Gailis is in enabling MNC NE to serve as the Regional Land Component Command in the Baltic Sea Region.

On October 15, LTG Wojciechowski and his delegation were briefed by Major General Flemming Mathiasen, Commander Multinational Division North, on the recent developments within MND-N. "We are very focused on building the Division Headquarters.", MG Mathiasen reported,

We are also very focused on building the Division.

Following its motto "Velox et acer" ("Quick and Sharp"), MND-N is working towards achieving full operational capability. The aim is to reach the unity of Command, and provide more training and training support for subordinate units. "We do not just train the Division and Brigades’ headquarters, but the Division and its Brigades.", MG Mathiasen stated.

"As the Corps Commander, I need Multinational Division North. Their team has achieved a lot, and I am very pleased to see it.”, LTG Wojciechowski expressed his satisfaction about the progress which has already been made. He also added: "There is still hard work to be done to be fully operational. Thuse, we should not stay  complacent." In addition, LTG Wojciechowski was thoroughly informed about the status and accomplishments of the Latvian Mechanized Infantry Brigade. Over the last three years, the Brigade has significantly improved its capabilities, including the mechanization and development of an artillery battalion, to name but a few of their achievements.

The visit culminated with a reconnaissance tour participated by the two generals. "We continue to demonstrate that our actions are firm.”, said LTG Wojciechowski,

Maps show just a piece of reality. Soldiers have to go out in the field to get a grip on reality. It is the best way to gain insight and be ready to fight and defend the Baltic Sea Region.
