Adazi Military Base expands as Allies boost their commitment to Latvia

SZCZECIN, Poland — A new barracks building was officially opened at Military Base Ādaži, Latvia on May 21, strengthening NATO's presence and operational readiness on the Alliance's northeastern flank.

The newly unveiled barrack is the fourth completed as part of Canada’s infrastructure support for the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia. The facilities provide modern living and operational conditions for allied troops, with each building equipped with laundry, storage, weapons rooms and other amenities.

I am grateful to Canada for its vital contribution to the development of Military Base Adazi, supporting the NATO Multinational Brigade soldiers serving in Latvia during these challenging times,

said Defence Minister Andris Spruds. The expansion follows the recent increase in personnel in the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade, which plays a key role in the defence of NATO's eastern flank. The brigade includes forces from over a dozen NATO naitons, including Sweden, Italy, Poland and Spain.

Canada has invested €18.5 million in the construction of the four barracks, which together can accommodate up to 600 soldiers, expandable to 1,200 if needed. Construction began in 2023.

Canada and Latvia continue to strengthen cooperation through infrastructure development and joint initiatives, including road upgrades for military transport. By scaling the Battlegroup from a battalion to a combat-capable multinational brigade, the Canadian Army has beefed up its footprint in Latvia as part of what is called in Canada Operation REASSURANCE.
