Combat engineers in Latvia enhance capabilities vital for modern warfare

SZCZECIN, Poland — In March, troops from NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia and the Latvian Army participated in exercise Verboom, the premier engineering training exercise for the Brigade. Held in Ādaži, Latvia, the event aimed to enhance combat engineering skills essential for modern military operations.

Focusing on mobility and counter-mobility, exercise Verboom showcased the critical role of combat engineers. These troops are vital in facilitating the movement of friendly forces while simultaneously hindering enemy advances. The event featured a variety of high-impact scenarios from explosive demolitions to constructing barriers and clearing paths through complex terrain. Such operations are critical not only in ensuring the safety of Allied forces but also in maintaining battlefield control during both offensive and defensive operations.

The multinational participation in exercise Verboom underscored the importance of Allied cooperation and readiness. With combat engineers at the forefront, the exercise ensured that NATO forces in Latvia are well-prepared to respond to a variety of challenges. As the complexity of modern warfare continues to evolve, the skills honed during exercise Verboom will remain indispensable for NATO's deterrence and defence posture.
